ABSTRACT

Throughout this book we have emphasized the importance of managerial thinking in the effective strategic management of firms, and noted the critical role managerial thinking plays in decisions about the formulation of organizational strategies and the implementation of those strategies. Earlier chapters addressing business definition, business strategy, and corporate strategy (the “what” of strategic management) noted that firms differ greatly in their ability to implement strategies effectively, and that managerial thinking about appropriate organizational structure for strategy implementation is an important potential source of competitive advantage.
