ABSTRACT

Most hospitalised patients are at risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) (Cohen et al., 2008). Venous stasis from immobility, and procoagulant pathol - ogies, place ICU patients at very high risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), the single main cause of pulmonary emboli. VTE prophylaxis, which is usually ‘routine’ for all ICU patients, is also discussed.
