Most (60-80 per cent) of the body is water. Water is distributed unevenly between:

n extracellular n intracellular

fluid, with potential ‘third spaces’ that normally contain no or insignificant volumes of fluid (e.g. 10-20 ml pericardial fluid), but which with disease can contain significantly more. Extracellular fluid is divided between the following compartments:

n intravascular n interstitial.
