ABSTRACT
ICU obstetric admissions are usually postnatal. The four main causes of obstetric critical illness are:
n pregnancy-specific reasons (e.g. pre-eclampsia); n increased susceptibility due to pregnancy (e.g. thromboembolism); n underlying medical conditions (e.g. congenital heart disease); n unrelated coincidence (e.g. pneumonia).
