ABSTRACT

Background Information Nigeria is bordered to the north by the Republic of Niger, to the east by Cameroon and the Republic of Chad, and to the west by the Republic of Benin. About 800 km of the Atlantic Ocean coastline forms the southern border. Nigeria came into being in 1914, when the former British Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria was amalgamated with the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria. Nigeria is the tenth largest country in Africa, and the most populous, with about 140 million people (FOS, 2006).
