ABSTRACT

Requirements: large hall with space for (a) the entertainment and (b) the market stalls Event time: two hours Languages targeted: any languages from countries which have the tradition of Christmas markets: e.g. Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Holland, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Hungary, Estonia, Poland, Italy, Spain, Finland, etc. The project here is presented in German. Impact: high (100+ pupils)

The main attraction of this project is its flexibility and replicability, as the model can be easily adopted/adapted and aimed at those whose target-language speaking skills in particular need enhancing, with more or less vocabulary being provided as required. Prizes for the most effort made throughout the event can be awarded, as can prizes for the best use of the target language, for example (see sample certificate in Part I, project 1, Score in French). The project was designed and developed in 2010 by the University of Brighton. The event can be filmed (see Appendix One for a sample consent form), and this can motivate younger peer groups as well as providing a good record for the participants themselves. Outside companies belonging to the target-language group can be approached to provide promotional items for one of the stalls or for prizes – many are very generous when it comes to giving away ‘freebies’ to such events (see additional materials on the accompanying DVD for a sample letter in German). The project can accommodate up to 150 pupils realistically, otherwise too many stalls are needed to avoid long queues. Why not invite similar year groups in other schools to join in with your celebrations? All you need is a hall large enough to hold everyone.
