ABSTRACT

This project explores the annual celebrations in France on July 14th, known in France as La Fête de la Fédération, by presenting a short play surrounding the events leading up to the storming of the Bastille and the subsequent revolution that ensued in 1789. It is an exciting project, first developed by the University of Surrey for an Able Linguists Day in 2009. Its aim is to introduce a major event in French history and provide the opportunity to re-enact short sequences using specific vocabulary. Awareness of the historical background to key cultural events is essential to understanding France and the French and the project aims to provide some of this cultural information in a fun and accessible way.
