ABSTRACT

We noted in Chapters 8 and 9 that learning is neither a random process nor something that can be reduced to a simple formula. Teachers need to be clear about the conditions that contribute to a vibrant learning environment, including knowledge and insights about the best way to organise and manage lessons. Broadly speaking, organisation is the structure that facilitates effective teaching and learning; management is the means by which it is achieved. The chapter explores the many facets of high quality organising and the different forms of managing to facilitate teaching opportunities and promote sound learning and discipline. The content includes advice and suggestions about the use of time, the special needs of younger pupils, frameworks for teaching literacy and mathematics, and the use of ICT. The final section introduces the concept of managing oneself and surviving in the job.
