ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore the many facets of the assessment process, ways in which information about children's academic, physical and social progress can be recorded, and some techniques for reporting to parents and colleagues. The balance of the chapter deals with an exploration of assessment for learning (AFL, formative assessment) and assessment of learning (AOL, summative assessment), the importance of monitoring and intervention, and the factors influencing a teacher's judgements about a child's attainment.
