ABSTRACT

The processes that contribute to the formation of the brain, the organization of behavior, and the emergence of mind and consciousness are complex and commonly believed to be embedded in different levels of organization (Revonsuo, 2000: Shaw & McEachern, 2001). Higher level functions like perception are dependent on but not reducible to lower level events involving gene transcription, the development of protein molecules, and transmitter release. Outputs at one level can, but do not necessarily, produce complementary changes at other levels because events occurring at each level operate within specific boundaries, which limit the interaction of the entities involved (Tononi & Edelman, 1998).
