ABSTRACT

Globalization has created an environment where learners no longer want to be placebound and prefer fl exible, online learning environments that allow them to engage in their educational goals anywhere, anytime (Dabbagh, 2007). Distance education is providing opportunities for learning anytime and anywhere. Th e online learning population is a heterogeneous and diverse group of learners from a variety of cultural and educational backgrounds. Noel-Levitz publishes a yearly National Online Learners Priorities Report, which includes a comprehensive examination of online learners and, according to that data (2009), the average online learner is female, around 35 years of age, working full time, and married with children. Th e majority are undergraduate learners taking 1-6 credits online. Th ey are primarily White, but there is a growing population of African American, Hispanic, and Asian learners.
