Developing Metacognitive Awareness of the Relationship Between Writing and Learning

In chapter 1, the three most commonly cited ways that writing is viewed in relation to learning were briefly described: writing to help remember facts and meanings, writing to foster critical thinking through analysis, and writing to construct knowledge new to the learner. The claim was made that these ways of using writing to foster learning did not develop neatly nor linearly for students. In this chapter, the factors that influence and shape these different uses of writing are presented.
