ABSTRACT

The development of the arts of all Western societies coincides with the development of their religious, socioeconomic, cultural, and political beliefs and practices. It is, therefore, natural that to gain a clear understanding of their philosophical base, the evolution of the arts of a society should be examined historically. It is also necessary to look at the specific needs that generated the creation of the various art forms, as this will reveal the various functions of the arts and will underline their nature and character. Today’s visual communication media arts, such as entertaining television programs, should be examined on the basis of their historical evolution, nature, character, philosophies they embody, and functions they perform.
