Capability Statements: The Truth But Not the Whole Truth
The most prodigious genre of documents in the defense R&D community is the capability statement, which is an organization's advertisement of itself. Capability statements serve a function in the sale and purchase of R&D. Like the transactional documents that lead to an R&D contract, they have their own distinguishing features. Chief among these features is a communicative purpose that is understood by all members of the discourse community. We turn now to that purpose and to the various means of implementing it, as we explore the knowledge-producing properties of this genre.
