Information for What Kind of Society?
By and large, communication research in the United States is quixotic. Researchers intently study a world that does not really matter, whereas ignoring the one that does. Much of the work that is done "seems" to be dealing with reality. Communication research concerns itself, among other matters, with development, literacy, broadened participation, and new modes that may provide greater choices. There are also studies of electronic utopias and ecologically inspired colonies in space, utilizing telecommunication to explore personal realms and distant galaxies.
