The User Interface Group's Wish List

The User Interface Group (UIG) was probably the largest work group at the ITC in 1985-1986. It was also the most fluid, with members coming and going from the group on a regular basis. For the first several years of the project, the group had discussion leaders (including, at different times, the director and associate director), but no formal manager. The group was also the most interdisciplinary, with members responsible for research and testing, writing and documentation, and graphic design, as well as, of course, systems designers. In the early years of the project, this group had less clear consensus and direction than did other groups. One system designer who worked on the project thought this had to do with the inherently problematic nature of interface design, specifically, that it is much less clear cut and well defined than some other aspects of systems design.
