Stories of Implants and Illness: Diagnosis and Direction
The sick women's stories turn on the point of diagnosis. The prediagnosis accounts in the previous chapter are stories of loss, disorientation, and confusion, but once they made their own diagnoses, the patients' stories changed in tone and direction. The women were able to discover feelings of optimism and hope. Postdiagnosis accounts are narratives of women taking action, often in opposition to their physicians.
