Examining Syntactic Variation Across Three English-Speaking Nationalities Through a Multifeature/Multidimensional Approach

During the past couple of decades, textual features of student writing have been studied extensively by linguists and writing experts in attempts to understand writing quality and explain maturational levels in writing. Although studies examining text features across sentence boundaries--discourse analyses--have become more popular in the past decade (see reviews in Connor, 1987a, 1987b, 1990a, 1990b; Witte & Cherry, 1987), research on syntactic features of student texts has had an overall greater impact on the field of composition studies.
