ABSTRACT
Since the advent of Music Television (MTV) on August 1, 1981, the phenomenon of rock videos has been the subject of considerable analysis and criticism. Much of the attention has focused on the visual aspect of the genre, and it has been claimed that the genealogical line of such videos could be traced through “live drama, opera, and theatre to ancient times” (Burns & Thompson, 1987, p. 10).
