ABSTRACT

Organizational communication is a relatively young, yet popular area of communication inquiry where scholars study the many ways human communication influences the development and maintenance of social organization. In the past three decades organizational communication has grown into a major interdisciplinary area of social scientific inquiry. Organizational communication has become a popular topic for research, with increasing numbers of theses, dissertations, books, and articles written concerning the subject (Redding, 1985). It has also become an area of curricular growth, with the introduction of undergraduate and graduate courses and programs focusing on organizational communication at most colleges and universities (Redding, 1985). There have also been corresponding development and growth of organizational communication divisions in major communication and management professional associations (Kreps, 1986c).
