Gayprop: One Foot In, One Out

In the 1990s, homosexuals played distinguished roles in the arts and the professions, in business, government, and in the military forces, and with the turn of the century their presence and contributions to the popular culture would be magnified. Despite their contributions, however, they found themselves to be living in two worlds, one the popular culture that was guided by the newprop of equality of status and opportunity, the other a mass culture where homophobes manipulated publics by use of the old props of fear, hate, and exclusion.
