ABSTRACT

Have you ever stopped to think how much time you spend each day with mass media? It would be a useful exercise to keep a diary of your media activities for several weeks, to time your reading of newspapers, magazines, and books, your viewing of movies and television, and your listening to radio and recordings. If you are an average American, you spend most of your free time watching television, but if you are a college student you spend a lot less TV time than average, and less than you used to as a high school or elementary school student. A careful look at who uses mass media, how they are used, and why, is essential to our understanding of the entire process.
