ABSTRACT

The structure of the mass media in a country is never a static phenomenon, something to be taken for granted. It is constantly subject to change. These changes are faster and more thorough during specific historical periods. A few years ago, like many other industrialized countries, Sweden entered into such a period of fast and radical change of its media structure. A series of both powerful and attractive mass media are now available to the public at large. These include videocassette recorders (VCRs), cable television, satellite television, and different computer-aided combinations such as teletext and viewdata. Sweden’s national media network is now being incorporated into an international media network with all of its implications. These changes began in the 1980s and will certainly continue throughout the coming decade.
