ABSTRACT

Accompanied by his sister Fatima, Jinnah arrived in Lucknow on the evening of 13 October 1937 and was received by his hosts, the Raja of Mahmudabad and Khaliquzzaman, President of the Muslim League in the UP. A sense of crisis permeated the entire top leadership of the League the following morning when Jinnah chaired a meeting of the Executive Council. Jinnah and other members of the Council were of the view that there was a fundamental difference between the Congress and the Muslim League. As a member of the Council of the Muslim League it was his duty to stand on a League ticket. A vote of censure was passed by the Council against both Sir Wazir Hasan and Seth Yakub Hasan. Jinnah had for the first time revealed his Islamic card at the Lucknow session. He had been encouraged by the response at the session, and thereafter his speeches and conduct acquired a new religious slant.
