ABSTRACT

From what does the Erlebnis, the multifaceted and intimate, spectacular, and for many visitors, the overwhelming experience of visiting the site of the ACC derive? I propose that it is related to a seemingly paradoxical interest to be everything for everybody: to be at once a tourist site, a pilgrimage site, a site for spiritual enlightenment and national awakening, for entertainment and consumption, adventure and education about cultural heritage. It is a modern site of spectacle and conspicuous consumption, aspiring for the ‘world-class’ and cultural supremacy.
