chapter  6
Growing up Korean: girls’ lives in Korea
Pages 14

Successful Korean women inhabit a place in time and are also members of a culture with roots in antiquity. History, prehistory, and a society’s creation myths influence present identities, determine who belongs where, and affect definitions of gender roles, dominance, and status. In this chapter we look at the way in which girls become women in Korea and discover individual histories in the context of their society and history. We will examine women managers’ stories of growing up Korean, and learn how their early years contributed to the person they are today and to their ability to succeed.
