ABSTRACT

In this chapter I look at jokes that exploit morphological and phonological aspects of language, tapping tacit knowledge. I start with morphological play and show how such play evokes implicit knowledge of the rules of morphological structure, and then go on to phonological play, in order to show, as well, how this play evokes implicit knowledge of phonological rules. In many jokes, these phenomena involve knowledge of more than one level of representation, and my decision about where to locate some of these jokes is a fairly intuitive one.
