Sand-counting has very little, if any, value. Its devotee is certainly successful in getting what he wants, but his desire is incomprehensible. His life is not flourishing but meaningless.

If this is right, one requirement of well-being is that the activities we pursue for their own sakes are worthwhile. But this lands us with another problem – at least as massive as any we have met so far. What makes an activity worthwhile?
