Hesba Stretton was the pseudonym of Sarah Smith, an evangelical writer whose lifelong concern for the conditions of slum children was demonstrated by her involvement in founding the London Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (1884) and by the themes and settings of her juvenile tract fiction.
