ABSTRACT

Actor and manager John Hare is principally identified with the plays of T. W. Robertson and the managements of the Court Theatre, the St. James's Theatre, and the Garrick Theatre.

Hare began an acting career in Liverpool in 1864. From 1865 to 1870 he appeared in the first performances of Robertson's best-known plays, most often as a comic character in older roles. As manager of the Court Theatre (1875-1879) his successes included C. F. Coghlan's A Quiet Rubber (1876), which provided Hare with the enduring role of Lord Kildare.
