ABSTRACT

The Anglo-Catholic insight was the tri-polar nature of Christianity: as doctrine, as institution, and as worship, all serving toward the promotion of holiness, hence interpenetrated by the sacramental principle. Emphasizing the corporate and historical character of religion, the High Church revival was the counterpart of romanticism; but in the practical circumstances of a state church in an age of liberalism, it had to take on the character of an embattled party.
