MAYHEW, HENRY (1812-1887) Popular journalist, novelist, and social histo-

rian, Henry Mayhew is best known for his interviews with London workers in the "Labour and the Poor" series for the Morning Chronicle (1849-1850) and his subsequent interviews with London street folk (1851-1852), published as London Labour and the London Poor (1861-1862). He is also credited with being one of the founders of Punch (1842).
