ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on key global issues within the context of US policy concerns and actions. US foreign policymakers identify a number of potential threats to global and US national security resulting from the worldwide dependence and increased use of oil. The domestic production of oil and natural gas is one side of the equation in thinking about the global dimensions of US energy security. At the same time, US policy has also sought to shape the international context with respect to the operation of energy markets. The International Energy Agency (IEA) is the global institution that represents the energy concerns of the world's richest, most economically developed nations. With the eventual decline in petroleum availability, the IEA focuses on energy efficiency and reduced reliance on finite fossil energy sources. The mission of the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) is to promote collaborative approaches to promoting development, with an eye toward economic, social and environmental dimensions.
