ABSTRACT

The process of change in emotionally focused couple therapy (EFT) is being strenuously researched in ongoing process studies (Bradley & Furrow, 2004, 2007; Makinen & Johnson, 2006; Naaman, Pappas, Makinen, Zuccarini, & Johnson-Douglas, 2005) . These studies are removing any veil of vagueness and erroneous suggestions that EFT is a “personality-specific” or “guru” model . The recently unearthed processes of change identified in the resolution of attachment injuries and softening events, for example, provide uniquely detailed maps for focused intervention . These new “minitheories” (Bradley & Johnson, 2005) tap into therapist and client responses and bring to light the precise interventions used to navigate successfully through transforming shifts in individual responses and interactional patterns in EFT .
