ABSTRACT
Sexual honour, namus, 1 refers to the social codes imposed upon women in order to control their behaviour and preserve male supremacy. A woman’s namus is primarily defined through her sexual ‘purity’ whereas men have no such restrictions and are expected to achieve respect, şeref, by keeping an eye on their female relatives and even on other women in their immediate environment in order to guard their sexual ‘purity’.
