ABSTRACT

There is no doubt that ICT and digital media have had a major impact on the ways in which young children today learn, play, work, and socialize. Indeed, there exists a substantial body of research that reveals the various ways in which such media has infiltrated the social and cultural practices of everyday life. In their study of young children's (aged from birth to six) use of popular culture, media, and new technologies, Marsh et al. (2005, p. 5) surveyed 1,852 parents and carers of children and concluded that “young children are immersed in practices relating to popular culture, media and new technologies from birth” and that young children are “growing up in a digital world and develop a wide range of skills, knowledge and understanding of this world from birth.”
