ABSTRACT

This chapter narrates about Stuart who was addicted to a variety of drugs and he had attended appointments for a few months, speaking mostly about his alcohol and cannabis use, and he gained some insight into how much he was annoying everyone at work. Stuart speaks about the hazards in co-dependency: one partner trying to control the other, lack of trust, and destructive anger that goes nowhere. He was fortunate in having a wife who decided to take steps to help herself, and took decision quite independently. Psychologically his need for drugs led to his being less successful than he might otherwise have been in winning promotion because he was so unreliable. Often in listening to people who are or have been addicted to substances, it seems obvious that they have used the substances to bypass emotional upheavals or bad or bored moods, but it is rare to hear someone say that they took the deliberate decision.
