ABSTRACT

This chapter narrates about Anna who was sent to the hospital by her GP and was admitted for detoxification. The joint impact of tranquillisers and heavy drinking would have been considerable, as the drugs and alcohol potentiate the effects of one another. In the course of her treatment, sometimes she expressed fury at the staff, but she was able to work through this and begin to understand herself and her anger. It is often said that addicted people deliberately deny the severity of their addictions, but something more subtle may be at work, for addiction itself blinds the individual to the reality of their situation. It is regrettable that Anna did not admit the extent of her drinking to the doctors who prescribed tranquillisers to her over the years. Anna's case demonstrates how a person can start to face up to her past rather than continuing to hide from it in addiction.
