Four-fifths of those prosecuted for witchcraft were women and a considerable proportion of their alleged activities were sexual. Both the gender bias and sexual emphasis have been seen by some historians as accidental by-products of economic and social conditions. Others found the explanation for these, and the key for understanding the nature of witchcraft itself lay in aspects of gender conflict and sexual obsession.
