ABSTRACT

With the government's continuing commitment to social and academic inclusion, and the media-influenced perception that behaviour remains a key problem for educators, it is vital that behaviour conducive to developing social skills to enable learners to work together and effective learning is promoted in schools (DfES/QCA 1999). This chapter will consider the meaning and use of the terms ‘behaviour management’ and ‘learning behaviour’, highlighting the roles of the learners and educators. It will discuss the types of behaviour that cause educators most concern and will provide a broad framework of responses to these problem behaviours. You will also be provided with the opportunity to relate your own experiences and observations to the main behaviour theories that provide educators with an understanding of why various strategies or interventions are utilised.
