ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION This is the fourth of the Motley Bibliographies and the first to be devoted to a specific theatrical art rather than to the literature of a particular culture or language. It is hoped to follow it with volumes on theatre architecture and stage design. When these were planned, we naturally sought enthusiastic, specialist collaborators in each field. We have been more fortunate than we dared hope, to find Sidney Jowers, who has devoted so much time and brought so much knowledge to the creation of this first title.
