ABSTRACT

The British objectives for the February cease fire were based on the belief that they could politicize the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), even without the group realizing that it was happening. The middle tier to the communications chain was a series of regular meetings between members of the IRA's executive and British officials held in a British government property in County Down. The Active Service Unit (ASU), unperturbed by the death of a prominent scientist mistakenly killed instead of their intended target, moved on with their plans to attack the places where the elite of British society gathered to relax and enjoy a meal. The ASU would continue their efforts against London in a rapid succession of attacks, but with a new, deadly twist. The ASU had, as intended, killed a member of the Bomb Squad disposal team.
