ABSTRACT

Motorola is a global leader in wireless, broadband, and automotive communications and technologies that help make life smarter, safer, simpler, synchronized, and fun. Sales were $27.1 billion in 2003. There are 88,000 employees worldwide. Motorola is focused on smart technologies, reducing cost and increasing efficiency and effectiveness in order to sell more products. A great deal of time and energy is spent creating streamlined, repeatable processes. There is a strong focus on the customers’ specific needs and issues, but there is always an effort to re-use existing platforms in order to gain efficiency and speed. In finding new uses for existing technologies, working in silos would surely create failure. Instead, successful product teams work across boundaries to discover solutions. It’s what the customer seeks; it’s what the internal corporate culture demands.
