The Myth of 'Etruscan Rome'
Everyone who studies the archaic period takes it for granted that Rome went through an 'Etruscan phase' during the monarchy. But what exactly does this mean? Some speak bluntly of an Etruscan conquest; others, more vaguely, of an Etruscan ascendancy; and others, more neutrally, of an Etruscan presence. These formulations cover a wide spectrum of opinion, and it will be best to keep them distinct in the discussion that follows. But all are agreed that, in some sense, archaic Rome was an 'Etruscan city'.
