ABSTRACT

When you first opened your advanced math book and looked at the pages, what did you think? If you are like most students, you became nervous and wondered how you would ever learn anything from that book. You were fortunate, though, to have a teacher who could teach you to read the textbook and how to understand the content of the course. To understand content texts, students must understand vocabulary and the concepts related to the topics in the text The information about vocabulary instruction that is presented in chapter 6 can also be applied to teaching your students how to read content area textbooks. Additionally, students must understand how to self-monitor their comprehension of content information. Students should also be taught how to use their content area textbooks and how various texts are structured.
