ABSTRACT

Introduction so FAA, THIS book has examined the variety of intellectual, cultural, social and linguistic backgrounds that individual children might bring to the learning environment. The different chapters have explored a variety of factors that, if not considered and managed appropriatel}'i may unwittingly lead to those managing the learning environment to place unnecessary barriers in the way of a child's learning. In particular, the book has raised issues with regard to learning needs that must be considered in relation to: the cultural and ethnic backgrounds of children; the challenges of teaching children for whom English is an additional language; managing the learning for children who have a special educational need; how a child's gender impacts on its learning; and the learning needs of children who are gifted or talented.
