ABSTRACT

FINDING THE FEELING When you first rehearse your song, you do not have to have the feeling, but very soon, for the song to come alive at all, you do have to have a feeling. Rather than preparing yourself carefully to withstand or ignore any feelings, from sorrow to anger, that might 'pop out' when you open your mouth to sing and sabotage you on your big day, it is better to meet them in advance as you practise. Keep some paper handkerchiefs handy; get to know what these feelings do to your breathing, and what they sound like in rehearsal'! Repeat the 'Star Treatment' exercise (page 177) to help you explore the feelings that are right for you and for the song. Sing through your song as an 'animal aria', like a cat or a wolf. Give the 'chords of emotion' a bit of freedom.
