ABSTRACT

OVERVIEW Singing, more than any other activity, has the ability to bring us totally into the present moment, with body and soul.

Why is it that so often the sounds that come out of our mouths fall short of our dreams? We may find that all is fine as long as we only sing 'in a certain way'. As soon as we try something else, our voice seems to fall apart. Our deepest wish is to be able to sing with ease, energy and expression, and to communicate intelligently and musically 'who we are'. At first we doubt our ability to sing authentically: we are not sure of our voices, believe ourselves to be getting it 'wrong', lose touch with our own energy and with the music, and feel inhibited about singing both from ourselves and for our listeners. Something that should be easy and natural has become difficult. Something has got in the way of our freedom of expression.
