chapter  3

The Introduction and fi rst chapter made the case that one important factor ancient Roman urbanites had for defi ning a street had to do with its role in the larger street network. Some of their decisions about where to place buildings for specifi c uses hinged on the location of a plot within that street network. The obvious question that follows is whether or not the archaeological evidence supports this observation based on literary evidence. This chapter presents the fi rst of four case studies in order to show that the archaeological evidence also proves the role of a street in the network infl uenced how Pompeians decided to use the space along that street.
