ABSTRACT

There have been various references to reflection on the self in earlier chapters, often in the contexts of the achievement of emancipatory states or professional development. The different uses of the term ‘reflection’ overlap and separating them to describe them in a meaningful manner inevitably is a matter of making the best sense, rather than perfect sense, of the situation. In terms of making sense of reflection in personal development, some say that professional development is largely a matter of personal development (Harvey and Knight, 1996), while for others they are quite separate. The overlap varies according to the conceptions of both.
